So far the pencil lip liners have been used for drawing the edges of the lips to give them a perfect shape or hold onto the color of the lipstick. January is often a gloomy time of year. Christmas is over and every body is back to work having eating, drunk and spent too much. This year seems to be particularly bad, with our economy sinking and a long spell of cold weather, not to mention the troubles in the Middle East. Research has shown that during a period of economic decline, the sale of lipsticks increases. During World War 2 women were wearing bright red lipstick, possibly to cheer themselves up during that period of fear and grief.

Buying a lipstick, is a fairly inexpensive way of treating yourself, and just think how much better you will look and feel, wearing a splash of colour on your lips. Finding the right shade of lipstick is crucial and once found you will notice how it will brighten and lighten your face.

It is important to mirror your natural look with the type of colour you choose for your lipstick. If you have deep or dark colouring, you can wear deep dark reds. If you have any warmth or auburn streaks in your dark hair, avoid shocking pinks and choose reds that have a hint of orange in them.

If you have light or pale colouring, a deep or dark lipstick will overpower your face. Again if there is any hint of golden or yellow in your hair, opt for a coral or warm brown lipstick, but nothing too dark or heavy.

If you have ash blonde, grey or white hair, pink lipsticks will be more complimentary. A nice clear fuchsia or rose pink will be very flattering.

If you have light or dark blonde hair, pale skin and soft brown, green, blue or grey eyes, you will look best in soft shades of pink, brown or coral lipstick.

Before you apply your newly purchased lipstick, make sure your lips are in good condition and not chapped and sore. Apply some lip balm regularly and “buff” your lips with a soft toothbrush and a small amount of moisturiser.

It is good practice to apply a lip base under your lipstick. Lip base acts as a moisturiser and will also give extra “sticking power” to the lipstick. Now apply a lip pencil in either a neutral shade or a close match to your lipstick. Outline the lips and then fill in over the whole lip area. This will stop lipstick “bleeding” into the area around your lips and give another layer of colour. Finally apply a coat of lipstick, preferably with a lip brush.

There is a vast array of lipsticks available in many different colours and varying degrees of price. It isn’t necessary to spend a lot of money but it is important to find the right colour for you. Beware of artificial lighting in some shops as colours can be distorted. It may be worth asking for a sample to take home so you can see the true colour before you buy.

How to make your lips look Marvelous, Darling!

Step 1

Two sets of famous lips when you think about lips, what is the first image that comes to your mind?
I have two, lucille ball and mick jagger.
Lucy could make so many facial expressions involving her lips and mick jagger is known for his lips because of his facial expressions.
There are many cosmetic tricks that can make you lips famous too.

Step 2

CLEOPATRA AND HER LIP COLOR I think a little background on lipstick and lip color will amaze you in how far technology has brought us.
Women have been wearing lip color for over 5000 years. One way they colored their lips was to crush semi-precious jewels and put them on their lips.

Cleopatra had her lip color made from crushed carmine beetles which gave a deep red pigment.
Lipsticks with shimmering effects were made with a substance found in fish scales called pearlescence.

Step 3

QUEEN ELIZABETH 1 AND WOMEN OF WWII In the 16th century during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1 lip color became popular. She made piercing black lips and yellow faces a fashion statement.
During WWII women began to “put their faces on” lip color grew even more popular due to the movie industry.

Step 4

DIFFERENT FORMS OF LIP COLOR Now that you have a little history on lip color, let me bring you back to the now. There are many forms of lip colors on the market today. There is even permanent lip color by tattoo. For some that might be an extreme measure but for others not. For me I couldn’t imagine not being able to change the color of my lips when I wanted to, so tattooing is not an option for me.
What types of lip color is available for us today?
Lipstick, Lip gloss, Lip liner.

LIPSTICK-a cosmetic product containing pigment,oils,waxes and emollients that applies color and texture to lips.

LIP LINER- a cosmetic product intended to fill uneven areas on the outer edges before or after applying lipstick. Lip liners are usually in pencil form.

LIP GLOSS- a cosmetic product used primarily to give lips a shiny touch and sometimes subtle color. It is usually in a liquid form or a soft solid but do not confuse it with lip balm. Lip gloss can be clear, translucent, and come in a variety of shades including frosted, glitter or metallic.

Step 5

LIQUID LUSTRE There are so many choices of lipsticks with many different purposes.

MATTE LIPSTICK- Also known as long-wearing. These lip colors have an ingredient in them called kaolin which is a derived from kaolinite. Kaolinite is a mineral with a chemical composition. Using kaolin in lip colors cause the staying power of the color. This mineral tends to be drying to the lips.

SHEER LIPSTICKS- These lip colors tend to have a low pigment concentration and are transparent. They are more moisturizing but wear off fairly fast.

CREAM OR MOISTURIZING LIPSTICKS- These lip colors contain conditioning agents such as shea butter. Shea nut butter is a slightly yellowish or ivory-colored natural fat extracted from fruit of the shea tree by crushing and boiling it. Shea butter is widely used in cosmetics as an emollient or mositurizer. It is also a anti-inflammatory agent.
Because of the moisturizers in these lip colors, they wear off easily, but are great if you have dry lips.

STAINING LIP COLORS- Lip stains have a high staying power, depending on the amount of stain in them. Using staining lip colors on dry or peeling lips will give an uneven lip color. Use a lip gloss over the stain to give the lips a moisturizing look.

GLOSS AND HIGH GLOSS- These gloss reflects a lot of light which in turn will give your lips a fuller look. They can be worn alone or over a lip color.

Step 6

Mineral sheer tint applying your lip color: apply a small amount of foundation to your lips this will soften and smooth them. The foundation will also fill in any lines and allow the lip color to stay on longer

Step 7

Lip liner pencil. Select a lip liner that is either neutral or in the same color family as you choice of lip color. Lip liner is applied usually before the lip color. A lip liner is used to define your natural lip line. A darker shade of liner is really not recommended for the fact that if your lip color does fade, all you will see is your lip liner color that outlines your lips.

Step 8

Always make sure that your lip pencil is nicely sharpened. A dull pencil will not perform very well and you will not be able to successfully line the natural lip line. After you sharpen the pencil you should to the tip and wipe it on a tissue, just to lessen the point.

Step 9

Center of upper lip to cone. You are going to stretch the lips with you index finger and your middle finger. By doing this it helps to smooth the lip tissue and allows for you to see the natural line of your lips. Starting at the center of the upper lip,you will begin to gently slide the pencil on the outline at the middle and move to the outer corner. It helps if you move is open a little while working on the upper lip.

Step10

Repeat other side of upper lip. Starting at the center of the upper lip, you will begin to gently slide the pencil on the outline at the middle and move to the outer corner.

Step 11

Lined lips. Bottom lip liner is applied from one corner to other. Leaving just a little area away from inside corner.

Step 12

The top and bottom lines of the lips should not meet.
If you have lined the lips and the line itself is to thick or two wide you can blend it with a lip brush to make corrections.
You may also blot with a tissue.

Step 13

Lip brush and lipstick

Applying the lip color.

Most lipsticks or lip color comes in the tube form. Instead of directly applying the lip color from the tube, I recommend that you use a lip brush. Using the lip brush will avoid you smearing the lip liner. Take your lip brush and fill it with your lip color by running it over the lip color.

Step 14

Applying lip color to upper lip with lip brush.

Starting at the center of the top lip, gently glide the lip brush to the corner of the upper lip working the lip color ont0 the lip.
Repeat to the other side.

For more intense or heavier application of lip color you can apply more lip color in the same manner as before.

Step 15

Applying lip color to lower lip with lip brush 10. Using the same method as for the top lip, fill the lip brush with your lip color and starting at middle of lower lip begin to fill in the lip with the lip color. Moving from middle to one corner and than to the other side.

For more intense or heavier application of lip color you can apply more lip color in the same manner as before.

Step 16

Blotting with a tissue to blend lip color together, gently roll your lips.
If you think you have to much lip color on than you can blot the excess of with a tissue.

Step 17

Oil control pressed powder

Last thing you need to do, but very important. You want to set the lip liner and lip color.

Using a blush brush and pressed powder will help you do this.

Taking you blush brush you want to fill just the tips of it with your pressed face powder.

Gently place a tissue over your lips, take your blush brush and gently dab your lips with the end of the brush. The powder will go through the tissue but it will not dry out your lip color.

Step18

Applying a lip gloss.
Your selection of lip gloss with be decided by what affect you want to achieve. Frosted,metallic or just a plain shine.

What ever type you choose, applying it must be with a gentle swipe so not to move lip color off lip or to blend lip liner and lip color together.
Now your lips look marvelous darling!!!!

Design Challenge – Lipstick Red Sofa

You love the guy, his apartment and the park it overlooks, but what faces you, as you enter, walk through the hall, the kitchen, the living room?

Ouch! It blazes like the rocket launch to Mars. It’s a bright red entrance hall leading to a bone white living room with a bright red, brand new sofa.

The obvious solution as any idiot can immediately figure out, is Craig’s list. However, the sofa was a present from his mother who lives ten minutes away by motorcycle, which she drives, wearing her leather jacket and big sunglasses. She is, by the way, very sensitive, cries easily, likes Pinot Grigio in long stemmed glasses, and has occasional bouts of depression. Options narrow.

Clearly, bright red is not your thing unless it’s on your lips or dessert: strawberries and cream at Wimbledon or “New Dawn,” Grandma’s climbing rose over the back porch.

Remember, that mountains are made to climb over.

Accordingly, here are some things to think about, wrapped around the way a room makes you feel when you walk into it. You’re on a limited budget so start by buying unfinished wooden side tables, a coffee table, a bookcase, and an entertainment table for television and hi-fi. Now, we choose some colors.

• Want the room to scream with the sofa blasting out at you. Keep the walls white. Paint all the tables, bookcase, and entertainment center black. Get black metal lamps with red or pink shades. Buy a red and black room sized rug, a few posters in red and black and invite Mum over for a glass of wine. gin.

• Want the room to have a mellow feel with the sofa making a gentle impact? Paint the walls in a dark taupe, or a medium grey. Paint the tables the same color, just one shade darker.

• Want the room to be somber, with the sofa and love seat nestling into the background, paint the walls a shade of medium brown.

Paint the furniture or better yet, buy wood finished in a natural medium brown, or finish it yourself.

• Want the room to be jumping up and down like acrobats flying through the air and the sofa doing somersaults? Paint the walls lipstick pink, orange, purple, or turquoise.

Personally, here’s what I’d do. I’d buy stain and Tung oil and finish the tables, etc., a soft brown. I’d paint the walls in a lighter shade of brown. I’d buy an earth brown carpet or dark finished wood floors. The lamps would be brass with off white shades. Wall decorations would be posters, repeating red shades of brown. Check out reproductions of Monet.

Now, let’s have Mum roar over on her Harley.

Put on some Mozart. Attack the cork on a chilled Pinot Grigio and pour, using your long stemmed glasses. Bring out tortilla chips, your best guacamole, for color contrast, and toast both Mum and the bright red sofa.

The Shady Side of Lipstick

Lipstick is sophisticated. When a girl is allowed to start wearing lipstick it is a milestone that she is one her way to becoming a woman. Lipstick can be seductress red or innocent sweet pearl pink. Lipstick is always the final touch for you make up. You wear it to work and on that special date.
Many women who wear very little makeup will wear lipstick. Lipstick brings out our best feature; our smile . It can light up our whole face.

There is a practical side to lipstick as well. Women who wear lipstick have a lower risk of skin cancer on their lips. Some lipstick has even more protection with an added sunscreen.

When choosing a shade of lip stick, consider the image you want to project. Vixen dark red or plum is probably not a great choice for a professional work environment. Little girl pale pink is not going to help you stand out at the club on Saturday night. You will probably want to wear a matte finish to church and a glittery lipstick on a night out with the girls.

Consider your skin tone. Women of color can wear more dramatic deeper colors than women with lighter skin without looking clownish. Olive skinned women are best to stick with warm plums and deeper reds. Fair skinned windows can wear anything with orange or pink undertones. Raisin shades and brownish reds in a medium range are good for all put the palest of women. The depth of the shade is as important as the shade itself.

You should consider the shape of your lips as well. If you have thicker lips and want to down play then try for darker shade and consider using a dark lip pencil to outline your lips. Darker shades tend to slim down your lip lines. Conversely, lighter shades make lips look thicker. If you have very pale lips and use a pale shade you lips will just disappear into your face. Consider outlining your lips with a medium shade and using a medium shade of lip color.

Just a note if you take Common Cup communion. Wipe off your lipstick before communion. Not everyone wants to have to avoid your cherry red lip stick the server can not completely wipe off the chalice. You can always reapply it at coffee hour.
